The Bed Is Shorter Than You: A Small Amsterdam Fact

A surprising share of the rooms in this city are fitted with beds that end somewhere around the ankles of anybody tall, and nobody mentions it. By the time it comes up, both coats are usually off.

the note

There is a measurement problem in this city that nobody warns visitors about. A great many of the beds in the older centre are around one metre eighty long. A guest of one metre ninety-five is therefore fifteen centimetres of person with nowhere to be, and he has usually noticed this on the first night, decided it is a minor inconvenience for sleeping, and then failed to connect it to anything else.

It connects to quite a lot. Full contact work needs a surface that holds two adults with room at the ends, and a bed that a single tall man overhangs is not that surface. The result, when it goes unmentioned, is a short negotiation in a doorway with two people still in their coats, which is a bad place to be solving furniture.

Why the beds are like this

Partly age and partly economics. Rooms in converted canal houses were carved out of domestic spaces built on narrow, expensive plots, and a bed that fits the room wins over a bed that fits the guest. Newer stock is better, generally two metres, and the airport hotels are better again. But the centre is full of what a listing calls a double and what is in practice a bed for one and a half people of average height.

It is not a defect anyone is going to fix for you. It is simply a fact about the building stock, in the same category as the staircases.

The test takes four seconds

Lie down on it. Look at your feet. If your heels are past the edge, the bed is short. That is the entire diagnostic and it does not require a tape measure or a conversation with a front desk.

The second test takes about the same. Sit on the edge and shift your weight sharply, twice. You are not testing whether it holds. You are listening for whether it announces itself, because a base that creaks under an ordinary movement will creak throughout, and a guest who is already uneasy about his weight will hear that noise as commentary for an hour.

What happens once it is written down

The answer comes back before the question has to be asked out loud, which is the whole reason the line belongs in the thread. Usually the answer is the floor: clear space of roughly two metres by one and a half, towels, and something under them if the floor is wood. Occasionally it is a different format, because a few of them need the bed and several of them do not care.

Guests hear the floor as a downgrade. It is not, and the reasons are boringly physical. The floor is firm, which is what oil work wants and what a soft hotel mattress works against. It is as long as the room. It has no edge to fall off. It can be approached from all four sides, which several formats need and most beds in the centre cannot offer because they sit against a wall on two of them. The only thing the bed has over it is that getting down and back up is easier, which matters a great deal if a knee is involved and not at all otherwise.

The sentence that solves it

My heels hang off the bed. Nine words, and everything downstream of it arranges itself. Add the room's clear floor space in rough metres and you have finished with the subject entirely.

What guests write instead, when they write anything, tends to be an apology with a fact buried in it somewhere near the end. The apology is the part that causes work; the fact is the part that helps. Strip out the first and send the second.

A note on apartments

Rented flats are the reliable exception to all of this, and they are worth considering if you are tall and have not booked your stay yet. The beds were bought by somebody who intended to sleep in them rather than by a procurement department, the floors tend to be wider, and the furniture is domestic. The trade is stairs: many of them sit up three or four flights with a turn at each landing, which changes nothing about the arrival window and a good deal about your own afternoon.

Either way, the useful move is the same one, made a day earlier than feels necessary. Look at the bed, then write the line.
